Li/air coin cell assembly (xiamen Tmaxcn Inc.)The air electrode sheet was die cut into circular disks with a small piece of Ni tab. The air electrode disks had a diameter of 1.59 cm and an area of 1.98 cm2. 2325 coin cell kits were purchased from Canada National Research CouncilCNRC, and 19 ×φ1.0 mm holes were machine drilled in the cell pans in an evenly distributed pattern for air to pass through. The electrode disks were connected by spot welding the Ni tab onto the drilled pans, dried at around 80°C under vacuum overnight, and then stored inside the dry box filled with purified argon. Cells were constructed by placing a piece of PP PE separator (xiamen Tmaxcn Inc.)diameter of 1.90 cm,Whatman GF/D glass microfiber filter paper onto the air electrode attached to the cell pan, adding an appropriate amount 100 uL of electrolyte onto the separator, and placing a piece of lithium diskdiameter of 1.59 cm and thickness of 0.5 mm, a stainless steel spacer with a thickness of 0.86 mm from CNRC, and a coin cell cover with a polypropylene gasket. The whole assembly was crimped inside the dry box on a pneumatic coin cell crimper purchased from Xiamen TMAX Battery Equipments Limited.

Cell testing.Li/air coin cells were placed inside a vacuum glove box (xiamen Tmaxcn Inc.)filled with dry air and connected to a battery tester (xiamen Tmaxcn Inc.).The glove box had a gas inlet and outlet, and the inside pressure waskept slightly positive by allowing the dry air to flow through continuously. The humidity inside the glove box was less than 1% RHas measured by a Dickson handheld temperature/humidity/dew pointmonitor. The cells were exposed to the dry air for 30 min and thentested by discharging at a constant current of 0.05 mA/cm2 to 2.0 V.
